Family Bucket List Series. Vol. 2. Issue 1

I probably should call this, Family Bucket List. Volume 2 ½, because I’m merely writing to tell you I’m in the planning stages for my next exciting Family Bucket List Vacation. For those of you who didn’t catch Volume I of the Family Bucket List, first let me explain what’s going on.

The idea for this trip grew out of a family movie-watching experience. We saw the movie The Bucket List, starring Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson. In the film, the two main characters, being treated for terminal illnesses, decided to carry out every adventure on their bucket list before it’s too late.

Luckily, my entire family is happy and healthy. But we do have limited time before my oldest is off to college. We decided that since we only have a few more years with us all living under one roof that we would each make our own bucket list of the places we would like to travel together. Then we compared our lists and came up with our family bucket list.

Our first family bucket list trip was a tour of National Parks including Grand Canyon, Lake Powell, Bryce and Zion Canyon, ending in Las Vegas (to offset all of the Natural Wonders, my kids wanted someplace “fake” on the itinerary). You can read about some of the highlights by clicking on “Bucket List” in the popular tags listed in the sidebar on the right of this blog.

I have spent the better part of the past few days, knee deep in travel plans for the summer. Our next bucket list trip will bring us to Hawaii! I’m so psyched! I have been calculating points mileage for our airfares, comparing hotel prices, checking out Frommer’s and other travel guides for suggested itineraries. It’s looking like we’ll spend most of our time on the Big Island and Maui. As I said, I’m still in the planning phases. So if any of my readers have been to these locales and know of any attractions or restaurants I shouldn’t miss (or should avoid), let me know!

When the time comes, I’ll be sharing more about our adventure. So stay tuned!

Best to you,

BURIED IN SNOW GEAR

I hope you are all enjoying this holiday season. I’ll be giving 2008 a great send off on the slopes!

Wow! All of the stuff I have to pack for a ski vacation for a family of five sure takes up a lot of space in the car. The beach is easy. Just throw a bathing suit in a bag and go. Skiing requires more and bulkier paraphernalia than the beach. I’m not even talking about the skis, boots, and poles. There are ski pants, sweaters, long underwear, gloves, hats, neck gators, goggles, heavy socks, turtlenecks, and more. Multiply that by five people for five days and you have a ton of stuff! Oh! I forgot to mention the groceries for breakfasts, snacks, hot cocoa, and the all important wine and libations. It will all be worth it when we get there. But for now, I’m just hoping I’ll be able to fit in the car.

Isis and Lisa’s Excellent Vacation

I just got back from a great vacation in the Bahamas with my family. I was happy to be going because it was a chance to vacation with my sister and her family. My kids love to play with their cousins and it’s always great to spend some extra time with my sister and brother-in-law—I’m lucky I have family who I would chose as friends.

And let’s face it, even a bad day at the beach is better than a good day almost anywhere else! Sorry to say, as much fun as I had jumping in the waves sipping daiquiris by the pool, and acting like a kid with my kids, the star of my vacation was neither human nor alcoholic beverage.

The absolute highlight of my week was a little excursion to a Dolphin Cay where I got to frolic, swim, and be pushed around like a toy by the dolphins! I even got to kiss and hug a dolphin named Isis.

I am thrilled to report I checked off another item from my list of things I wanted to do or see before I die: SWIMMING WITH DOLPHINS.
Tell me something you have experienced that was a major item on your wish list. Or share a dream you hope to fulfill someday. Remember! Challenge me. Anything you share I have to work into a story for you when November is over.
